Jjimjilbang, Sauna and Alcohol After Treatment: How Long to Wait (2026)

3D Rendering

By Dr. IM JUNHYUNG · Updated

Short answerDo the jjimjilbang, hot springs and late nights first, and treatments after. After Botox, skip heat, alcohol and hard exercise for the rest of the day. After energy-based lifting, Rejuran or Potenza, plan about a week without saunas. After filler, allow one to two weeks without saunas, alcohol or pressure on the area.
  • Heat and alcohol widen blood vessels, so swelling and bruising can be worse and last longer.
  • “Sauna” here includes jjimjilbang hot rooms, hot baths, spas, hot springs and hot yoga.
  • A normal, lukewarm shower is fine. It’s prolonged heat that matters.
  • When two rules overlap, follow the longer one.

Why heat and alcohol matter

Most treatments leave the skin a little inflamed for a while — that is part of how they work. Heat and alcohol both widen blood vessels, so in the first days they can mean more swelling, more bruising, or bruising that takes longer to fade. After energy-based lifting, the tissue has also just been heated on purpose; adding more heat on top goes the wrong way.

In most cases nothing serious happens if you slip. The real cost is spending the last days of your trip with a puffier face than you needed to — and, after filler, a harder time judging the result before you fly.

What counts as a sauna

In Seoul it’s easy to underestimate. For aftercare, treat all of these the same:

  • Jjimjilbang hot rooms and saunas, including salt, charcoal and clay rooms
  • Hot baths, spas and hot springs, including Japanese onsen
  • Hot yoga and steam rooms
  • Long, very hot showers

The cool rest areas of a jjimjilbang are fine; it’s the heat that counts. A normal, lukewarm shower and washing your face are fine too, unless we tell you otherwise. Facial and “small-face” massages count as pressure — see filler and skin boosters below.

Botox: the rest of the day

Don’t lie down or rub the area for four hours, and skip saunas, alcohol and intense exercise for the rest of the day. The same four-hour rule applies to jaw Botox and skin Botox. From the next morning, your trip is back to normal.

Energy-based lifting: about a week

After Ultherapy Prime, skip saunas and alcohol for about a week; after Duotite or Alltite, alcohol and saunas for a week. After Thermage FLX and XERF, avoid saunas for about a week. Sofwave is the shortest: avoid saunas for a few days.

These treatments are usually back to normal the same day, so they suit short trips — as long as the hot rooms come before them, not after.

Skin boosters and Potenza: a week, plus makeup and sun

After Rejuran, avoid saunas, alcohol and strong massage for a week, and skip makeup on the day. After PDRN, avoid saunas and alcohol for a week. After Potenza, avoid exfoliation, saunas and strong sun for a week; no makeup on the day, light makeup from the next day.

Small bumps, marks or redness usually last one to three days, which is why we put these early in your trip.

Filler: one to two weeks

After hyaluronic acid filler, avoid pressure on the area, saunas and alcohol for one to two weeks. After ligament filler, don’t press or massage the area for a week — that includes facial massages.

Filler is also the treatment we like to see again before you fly, so plan two to three days. Severe pain, a colour change in the skin or any change in vision after filler needs attention straight away: contact us immediately.

Put the heat first: ordering your trip

The simplest rule is order. Go to the jjimjilbang, the hot springs and the late nights at the start of your trip, then have treatments. Korean barbecue is fine afterwards; it’s the soju that comes with it you’ll want to skip.

Your tripAn order that works
3 daysDay 1: arrive, jjimjilbang or spa. Day 2: consultation and energy-based lifting. Day 3: sightseeing without hot rooms, then fly home.
5 daysDay 1: jjimjilbang, spa or a big dinner out. Day 2: consultation and treatment. Days 3–4: shopping, cafés and palaces; message us with any concern. Day 5: a check if needed, then fly home.
Seoul, then JapanTell us your onsen dates. We’ll choose and order treatments so the heat rule has passed by the time you get there.

These are examples, not prescriptions — we finalise your plan around your flight at consultation. See how long to stay in Seoul for recovery times by treatment.

Exercise and flights

Hard exercise works like heat: it raises blood flow and body temperature. After Botox, skip it for the rest of the day; after other treatments, ask us what applies to your plan.

Flying is rarely the problem in itself. On the flight, drink water, skip alcohol and, if you had injectables, sleep with your head slightly raised.

FAQ

Can I go to a jjimjilbang after Botox?

Not the same day. Skip saunas, alcohol and intense exercise for the rest of the day, and don’t lie down or rub the area for four hours. From the next day, it’s fine.

How long after filler can I go to a sauna?

One to two weeks. Avoid saunas, alcohol and pressure on the area during that time; we’ll tell you which end of that range applies to your plan.

Can I drink alcohol after Ultherapy?

We ask you to skip saunas and alcohol for about a week after Ultherapy Prime, and for a week after Duotite.

Is a hot shower OK after treatment?

A normal, lukewarm shower is fine. Avoid long, very hot showers and baths for as long as the sauna rule applies.

Can I have a facial massage in Seoul after treatment?

Wait. After filler, avoid pressure on the area for one to two weeks; after ligament filler, no pressing or massaging for a week; after Rejuran, no strong massage for a week.

I’m going to a Japanese onsen after Seoul. What should I do?

Treat an onsen like a sauna. Tell us your dates, and we’ll order your treatments so the heat rule has passed by the time you get there.

What if I already went to a sauna?

Usually nothing serious happens — swelling or bruising may just take longer to settle. If you notice increasing pain, a colour change or any change in vision after filler, contact us right away.
